How much does it cost to waterproof a 1,000 sq ft basement?
A basement that size has roughly 130 feet of wall. Treating the full perimeter with an interior drainage system runs about $8,000 to $14,800. Most jobs do not need all four walls. Treating the two where water enters is nearer $3,700 to $6,900, which is why published national averages sit around $5,200.
What is the difference between interior and exterior waterproofing?
Interior systems manage water that has already reached the wall, collecting it in a drain and pumping it out. Exterior work excavates down to the footing and stops it getting there. Exterior is roughly two and a half times the price and is the more complete fix; interior is what most homeowners actually buy, and for most seepage problems it is enough.
Will insurance pay for basement waterproofing?
Not for the waterproofing itself. Standard policies exclude seepage and groundwater as maintenance, and flood damage needs separate flood cover. Where a burst pipe or a failed appliance caused the water, the resulting damage is usually covered even though the waterproofing is not, so keep the two separate on any claim.
Is it worth waterproofing a basement?
If water is entering, yes. It is cheaper than the rot, mould and foundation damage that follow, and an unfinished wet basement is a live problem when you sell. If the basement is merely humid, a dehumidifier and better exterior grading and downspouts often fix it for a fraction of the price. Get someone to look at where the water is coming from before agreeing to a perimeter system.
